There are a number of server with run games of different length with particular features to make them slightly different. When you want to play one you create a character. You start with nothing on a server other than a basic ship. With this you carry out missions and trade to raise money for better ships with better weapon systems and to create colonies.
Most servers are PK so you will die and you will lose your colonies but after a while that stops happening so often because you get better – there are no experience levels with character bonuses, it is you understanding the game and getting better at it that makes the difference.
You can form or join corporations (4-6 strong normal) and play within a team or play solo against everyone else – your choice there are no faction you are forced to join.
Start with the beginner re-bangs - (you don't know enough about the game not to - believe me) learn to make money from trading then build a colony, it will need resources and people and defence. Build it as big as you can and defend it as well as you can - this will take a few days, then you get better and it takes less time. Build more colonies, get more weapons, get better, die a lot and learn to fight other players and invade their colonies.
After a while you are one of the vets, the experience points mean less, it is just a good way to spend time. - One day I may get there.
